Interval Ear Training is the practice of recognising the distance between two notes just by hearing them—without any reference instrument. It helps students develop a keen sense of pitch relationships, making it easier to play by ear, sight-sing, and understand music at a deeper level.

Why Does It Matter? 💡

  • Better Musical Intuition – Imagine hearing two notes and instantly recognising whether they form a perfect fifth, a major third, or a tritone—just like knowing the difference between a question and an exclamation by tone alone! This skill helps students grasp melodies and harmonies more naturally.

  • Improved Aural Awareness – By training to hear intervals, students learn to recognise the building blocks of music. Whether it’s identifying the leaps in a melody or understanding chord structures, interval training strengthens their ability to "hear" music before playing it.

  • Stronger Sight-Singing & Transcription – When students can recognise intervals by ear, they can sight-sing with greater accuracy and dictate music more efficiently. This skill is crucial for transcribing songs, composing by ear, and improving overall musicianship.

  • Enhanced Playing & Improvisation – Whether playing an instrument or improvising a solo, knowing intervals by ear allows musicians to navigate their instrument with confidence. It helps in playing harmonies, constructing melodies, and even tuning by ear!
